434 3rd Street, NE – Application for proposed construction of new two unit flat with requiring areaway entrance, front steps,awning, and closing of existing apron and curb and gutter.
Union Pub, 201 Massachusetts Avenue, NE – Conversion to Enclosed Sidewalk Café. Union Pub is proposing to enclose their existing sidewalk café, which is currently covered with an awning. The enclosure would be roll-down plastic sheets to be lowered during winter months and inclement weather. No other changes to operations requested.
Ludlow Taylor Elementary, 659 G St. NE | Application #10575606 **TO BE CONFIRMED** Ludlow Taylor Elementary School recently repaired an existing retaining wall and installed a new 8′ high wrought iron fence. The wall was finished in the summer of 2017. Approval of this as-built condition is being requested because the original permit allowed for a 6’ fence only.
DDOT Budget Oversight Hearing. The committee will discuss issues to raise at the Council’s budget oversight hearing for the District Department of Transportation, to be held on April 9, 2018.
CAPITOL HILL CORNER 
In reference to the ANC6B meeting Tuesday, and the MPD “Clear Parking Initiative,” below is a letter I sent to Councilman Allen on Sunday. A reasonable resolution at this point might be to suspend the initiative — a fiat actually — until the ANCs, city council etc., have had an opportunity to study the matter, hold public hearings, look at alternative proposals, etc. In other words, allow the democratic process to work its will. Dear Councilman Allen,
The Metropolitan Police Department considers Capitol Hill residents a potential terrorist threat is what I learned today when I opened the Hill Rag, “Police Say No Parked Cars Along Marathon Routes,” March 2018.
An unnamed MPD spokesperson, explaining why all cars parked along East Capitol St., North Carolina Ave. NE, etc. and adjoining streets for the running of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, said “with the advent of vehicular attacks that we have seen in the United States and around the world there is a necessity to implement parking restrictions which include removing all vehicles along special event routes, particularly during races and parades.”
Uttered no less in the passive voice, “there is a necessity.”
If the MPD is worried about vehicular threats, order the marathon to run around a cordoned-off RFK stadium 26 times or, better yet, cancel rush hour, a Monday-through-Friday event that constitutes a far larger threat to public safety.
I’m not sure which is more appalling, that the MPD issued the fiat, or that the city council and the mayor are powerless to do anything about it.

Very good point about the greater threat posed by rush hour. The safety of each of us is harmed by the emissions, even when no one gets hit.
