New French Bakery to Open Near Eastern Market

A new boulangerie/patisserie will open in the space formerly occupied by Radici.  The restaurateur – who wants to remain anonymous pending the arrival his business partner in a week or so – told Capitol Hill Corner that together, they operate four restaurants in Paris.  The Capitol Hill bakery – which will be named Saint-Georges – will be their first US venture.  The opening could be delayed for several months as the interior buildout continues.

The owner says the bakery will feature bread and pastries made by artisans from Paris using flour and butter imported from France.  The goal is to produce baked goods as close in quality as possible to what one finds in France.  The coffee will come from a company based in Montreal.  They will also carry sandwiches, all kinds of soups on a rotating basis, and French wine.

Asked why they picked the location across from Eastern Market, the owner said they had been looking for many years to find the right spot.  They found a location in Annapolis, but had to withdraw because of the pandemic.  They sought locations in Georgetown and Virginia without success.  Then the owner’s business partner happened across the former Radici and they decided this was the place.

sigh. bon chance but perhaps they can leave their overbaked ego at their anonymous four restaurants in paris.

What a nasty post. Bon (sic) Chance, whatever that means, but Soyez les Bienvenus to Capitol Hill. You will find us a welcoming community. Can’t wait for your opening.

sigh. there is excellent wheat grown in the mid Atlantic and excellent coffee roasted in this city. many local bakeries know this. the francophone egoism that only french ingredients will suffice has a long history of ruining perfectly good cultures and economies. would love that these new owners embrace their community instead of writing it off.

Wow! Xenophobia is alive and well. Do you hat bread or the French? I welcome Saint-Georges and look forward to supporting a new Hill shop!

Sounds like someone burned their own toast this morning. Local wheat and butter are wonderful and available at many places in the area. I salute them and often busy them myself. That said, French pastries will be a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and we look forward to enjoying them with the many welcoming neighbors on the Hill. Sorry we won’t see you there, but clearly getting upset over bread takes a lot of your time.

  2. Much as I loved Radici, I’ve been pining for years for a French cafe. THRILLED.

Sounds great to me. Great bread is hard to find particularly on the Hill on weekdays. Best thing they could do would be to put in a doggy window so those of us with dogs could order and sit outside. Regrettably, DC isn’t as sophisticated or as enlightened as European cities and dogs are not allowed in restaurants. Odd since they let children in and most dogs are cleaner than children, quieter, and better behaved. And on a leash.

The ink is hardly dry on the great news that we are about to have a French bakery on Capitol Hill and the whining begins. An enigmatic post disparaging the new owner and another insulting children. People, get a life.

Love French pastries! Welcome to Capitol Hill!

This is a pretty fast turnaround particularly how many commercial spots have been empty for months/years. I wonder if talks broke down because Stanton found a tenant they preferred.
Hope it works out for the new tenant.

Wonderful news. We need good coffee, great baguettes, a place to relax with friends, great croissants, etc. Welcome to a wonderful location. Merci for choosing Eastern Market.

Count my husband and me in on the welcoming committee. We are thrilled to see the space being put to use not too long after Radici left. We feared it might be the next space to sit vacant for a while.

Super happy a new bakery w/coffee is coming to the prior Radici space. This is an A+ location that deserves greatness!
