7-11 on PA Ave SE will Close October 7

The 7-11 at 637 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, will close on Monday, October 7.  An employee said that they were not informed of the reasons for the closure but “it could be related to stealing.”  The employee said that the company tries to relocate employees to other locations.  The Barracks Row 7-11 closed suddenly in August and an employee cited shoplifting as the reason.

The location on 15th and Independence Ave SE is also closing next month. I think they are closing stores all over the area as a broader strategy…

The 400 block of 8th Street has been notably cleaner and more pleasant to walk down since the 7/11 there closed.

Every time a 7-11 closes an angel gets its wings. This is great news as, like the former location on 8th Street, it was a perpetual dump inside and out.

“an employee cited shoplifting as the reason”

Closing is one way to reduce shoplifting, and the adjoining businesses probably appreciate a similar drop in shoplifting from its absence.

Sounds reasonable. Inventory shrink gets directly charged to bottom line. Have to sell a lot of $2 coffees to make the up for the lost profit and necessary profit to meet fixed costs.

A June 2024 article indicated they were closing 250 stores around the country for a variety of reasons.

I read about 272 stores will be closing across the country this year as the company is losing money. The company closed close to 200 stores last year. It seems they over-expanded, especially here with 3 within walking distance from each other. Folks living around here seem to dislike them which is a shame, as it served the people who come to the neighborhood to work in all the businesses around here. I liked their coffee, not overpriced like other places around here, particularly early when everything else around was closed. And who doesn’t enjoy a slurpee on a hot humid evening? I hope employees get other jobs.
