Update: The For Lease sign in the window of Santa Rosa Taqueria signals its move to 301 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, the space formerly occupied by Pret A Manger. The restaurant which opened in the summer of 2017, closed December 23, “until things get a little better” according to the website.  Mendelsohn has other two restaurants in the same block – We, The Pizza and Good Stuff Eatery. , SE
Here’s the new location for Barracks Row’s Howl to the Chief which moves to the space a few doors away formerly occupied by City Bikes at 719 8th Street, SE..  Staff said that the move will be complete in “two or three weeks” and will progress seamlessly – opening the new location while closing down the old one
The fence around the US Capitol complex started coming down last weekend, and by last Monday had mostly been reduced to what remains around the Capitol Grounds itself.  How long that barrier stays up is unclear.  Last week Senate and House leaders announced new Sergeants at Arms who will oversee security going forward.  Senate Majority Leader Schumer named retired Army lieutenant general Karen Gibson who served as director of intelligence for U.S. Central Command as the new Senate Sergeant at Arms.  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi named Maj. Gen. William Walker, the commander of the D.C. National Guard, as the new House Sergeant-at-Arms.
The Eastern Market Community Advisory Committee met last week.  Market Manager Barry Margeson announced that hours of operation for the market have been extended:  Hours are now M-F, 9-6; Saturday, 8-5; and Sunday, 9-5.  Hours for outdoor vendors have been extended to 4pm.  Farmer line farmers return at the beginning of April. 

The National Park Service announced today that the cherry blossoms are at their peak.  Road closures are in place for vehicular traffic around the Tidal Basin, East Potomac Park and West Potomac Park, effective Friday, March 26. R.I.P.  Distad Family member Donna Jean Cranford, 76, of Mechanicsville, MD, who passed away suddenly, January 19, 2021.  Her brother, John Distad, said she succumbed to the covid virus after going to the hospital on New Year’s Day.  She is remembered by Distad’s friends  customers for her kindness, work ethic, and love of and commitment to family.  John Distad said she was “key to [Distad’s] operation.  For more go here:  https://www.brinsfieldfuneral.com/obituary/donna-cranford

  • Update the Eastern Market Metro Park Advisory Taskforce on the renovation of Eastern Market Metro Plaza, at 1:30pm.

Saturday April 3

Call for volunteers.

  • Help needed with the Potomac Avenue Pocket Parks. Meet at 10:00am at the park along K (the one with the splash pad). We will be mulching and planting hostas along the back fence, and clearing up at the point to create a space for colorful flowers. Same rules apply: Volunteers should bring water, gloves, and hand tools if they have them. Folks can register to volunteer at https://guerrillagardenersdc.org/volunteer
