The Week Ahead…ANC Highlights…Some Photos from the Past Week

Last Monday, at a community meeting organized by ANC6B Commissioner Jennifer Samolyk, Rachel Pike and Jo McDaniel introduced their concept for a new bar/café with a dance floor option, catering to the LGBT community. The location – 319 Pennsylvania Avenue, the former site of Stanton and Greene.  The idea met with support and approval from those attending the virtual meeting.  However, 24 hours later at ANC6B’s regular monthly meeting, Samolyk announced that the landlord had decided to rent the space to another party.
Saturday saw the latest in a series of DC Vault USATF-sanctioned pole vaulting competitions – this one on C Street, SE, catty corner from Eastern Market. 
The event was sponsored by DC Vault, a non-profit Pole Vault club serving the Washington, DC Metro region, and Eastbanc, Inc.  DC Vault provides year-round training for beginner through elite-level athletes.  Their training facility is on the RFK campus at 2200 East Capitol Street, NE DC.
Tuesday, at ANC6B’s July meeting, the Commission voted unanimously to protest an application for a retail liquor license for Sip Wine & Spirits at 11th and K Streets, across from Ginko Gardens.  The protest will be filed on the basis of the effect on real property values; peace, order and quiet; residential parking; vehicular and pedestrian safety; and for being within 400 feet of a school. It seems likely the application is headed for a denial.

New leaership for Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church:  On August 1st at 11:00am, Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church will welcome Rev. Rachel Landers Vaagenes as Senior Pastor. Raised in Southern California, Rev. Vaagenes came East to attend Princeton Seminary and served as Associate Pastor at Georgetown Presbyterian for the past ten years.   Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church is at 201 4th Street, SE.

Among items on the draft agenda:

  • Discussion of 1300 block of North Carolina Avenue, NE, bike lane installation options by Will Handsfield, DDOT Bicycle Program Specialist. DDOT is currently considering what type of bicycle facility to add to the 1300 block of North Carolina Avenue as part of its high priority bicycle network, and to ensure continuity between the C Street project (under construction) and the rest of the city’s bicycle network. This includes consideration of different options for directions of placement of car traffic and bicycle traffic lanes, including conversion to one-way vehicle traffic, as well as consideration of car parking.

  • Installation of raised crosswalk at northernmost crossing of 15th Street, NE. and Tennessee Avenue, NE. (adjacent to Miner Elementary).

  • 1300 I Street, NE. Zoning Adjustment Application re Modification of Consequence to previously approved plans to add a penthouse enclosure, including a staircase, and roof deck.
  • 810 C Street, NE. Historic Preservation Application – review of a project for the renovation and a 10 foot addition, add third story to two-story building, and reconfigure façade’s windows and door openings to an existing two-unit row house with conversion to a single family row house in the Historic District.

DC Public Library will host a virtual community meeting on the Southeast Library Modernization Project at 6:30pm.
